Steve Mcqueen's 'le Mans' Suit Being Auctioned

The racing suit worn by McQueen in the movie Le Mans is being offered at the Profiles in History Icons of Hollywood auction being held in Beverly Hills in December. Decked out in period sponsorship patches from Gulf, Heuer and Firestone, the two-piece white suit also bears the name of McQueens on screen character, Michael Delaney. An image of McQueen suiting up before the race has become almost other as iconic as the actor himself, and used to advertise Tag Heuer watches designed in tribute to the film. The film was a labor of love for the life-long auto enthusiast.

McQueen Le Mans Suit Sells for $990G

The amazing $984k total makes the suit most expensive item of motor racing related memorabilia we're ever likely to see, excluding complete cars. The overalls, bearing the name of McQueen's character Michael Delaney, were given away in a UK newspaper competition in 1971. The auction catalog explained: "When principal filming of Le Mans was completed, Solar Productions donated this suit to the British newspaper, for a special Le Mans-themed contest in 1971.
